In an effort to discredit the work of his predecessor’s nuclear deal with Iran, aides of Donald Trump hired a private Israeli intelligence firm to investigate Obama administration officials who worked on the landmark foreign policy achievement. The aides reportedly contracted the Israeli intelligence firm in the day after the president had visited Tel Aviv. Their mission was to get intelligence on Ben Rhodes, a former White House staffer, and Colin Kahl, a former foreign policy advisor to Barack Obama.
Both Ben Rhodes and Colin Kahl have taken to Twitter to discuss the storyrecently broken by The Guardian. According to Kahl, his wife may have been the target of a phishing from an intelligence gathering operation when someone posing as a representative of a charity contacted her and requested an in-person meeting in Washington, D.C.
“The fact that I even have to think about the possibility that my family was targeted by people working for the President is yet another sign of the fundamental degradation of our country that Trump has produced.”
A source familiar with the details of the operation said:
“The idea was that people acting for Trump would discredit those who were pivotal in selling the deal, making it easier to pull out of it.”
Ben Rhodes, one of the targets of the intelligence operation, said, “I was not aware, though sadly am not surprised. I would say that digging up dirt on someone for carrying out their professional responsibilities in their positions as White House officials is a chillingly authoritarian thing to do.”
The allegations against the president’s aides have all the trappings of a Trump scandal. The White House is currently facing an investigation led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller. The aforementioned investigation focuses on speculations that Trump campaign officials may have colluded with Russian intelligence agencies to find disparaging information about Trump’s political opponent, Hillary Clinton.
Last year, leaked emails between Donald Trump Jr. and publicist Robert Goldstone were found to discuss a meeting held in Trump Tower between Paul Manafort, Don Jr., and a Russian government lawyer.
“This is obviously very high level and sensitive information,” Goldstone wrote, “but is part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump.”
